Hear what environmentalists are saying about clean, renewable wind energy

Preserving the land's natural beauty has always been a priority of the people of Maui. Kaheawa Wind is equally committed, working to operate in harmony with the unique environment to produce clean, renewable energy.

  • No pollution: Wind energy produces zero air or water pollution
  • Local power: Kaheawa Wind produces over 126,000,000 kilowatt hours of electric energy annually, enough to serve over 11,000 households
  • Reduced use of fossil fuels: By replacing the burning of fossil fuels at Maui's power plants with clean, renewable wind energy, Kaheawa Wind will eliminate the use of over 236,000 barrels of oil or 69,000 tons of coal annually
  • Fewer emissions: Based on data recently published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA) Emissions and Generation Resource Integrated Database (E-GRID), traditional generation sources producing an equivalent annual amount of electric energy would emit greenhouse gases (GHG) consisting of nearly 91,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 440 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx). To put this in perspective, 91,000 tons of CO2 is equivalent to the annual emissions of over 16,000 cars or over 11,000 SUVs. In addition, equivalent energy production from traditional sources would produce 370 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2). Both SO2 and NOx cause acid rain, which harms our lakes and rivers
  • Conservation of wildlife: Because the area is home to three endangered native birds and one native bat, Kaheawa Wind developed a Habitat Conservation Plan which is designed to provide a "net benefit" to the species. This plan is being implemented by Kaheawa Wind's full time senior wildlife biologist
